We are the families of Jews, survivors from Bobowa region. Our relatives were brutally murdered in the forest of Garbacz. We want to remember Them.

The world of Bobowa Jews ended at the time of German army occupation in August 1939. Then the persecution began. The Jewish kehilla was influenced by religious and social movement called Hasidism from the very beginning of its existence. Bobowa has become one of the most important centers of Hasidism in Poland. Ghetto in Bobowa
October 1941
n October 1941 , Germans established ghetto in Bobowa where about 2200 Jews were gathered. It’s area was closed in entire center of the town. The ghetto initially remained open and it was fenced in summer 1942. In the period of January-March 1942 several executions took place, mainly at the local Jewish cemetery. The first execution took place in January the 5th 1942. It was leaded by Gorlice Gestapo officers. Victims were buried in a common grave at the Bobowa cemetery. At spring and summer many Jews from Bobowa ghetto were taken into labor camps in Bieżanòw, Prokocim. 210 Jews were sent to Bieżanòw for work at the railway . On August 13th 1942 the liquidation of ghetto in Bobowa was carried out. On August 14th, the Nazi committed a mass murder and shot 25 people at the market in Bobowa while the others were deported to other places of execution.

August 14th 1942
About 700 Jews - the majority of ghetto inhabitants were shot in Strozowka near Gorlice ( Garbacz forest) and all of the others deported to the labor camp in Szebnie or ghettos in Gorlice and Biecz, from where they were moved to extermination camp in Bełżec. After the execution the occupants dismantled 82 houses and sent material and property by rail to Reich. After the war no Jew returned to Bobowa.

Garbacz Memorial 1942 is a place where we want to find descendants and cultivate the memory of our ancestors brutally murdered on August 14th 1942 in Garbacz forest. It is a sign for us and our descendants that such a tragedy will never happen again.
